our Food Manifesto
The Stone House Food Manifesto was written by Noah Blose (Cook and Kitchen Manager), Tahz Walker (Land Steward) and Emily Wooldridge (Hospitality Manager). Three intentions guide our food choices at The Stone House.
1. Welcome and nourish our guests so that they feel at home.
No matter the type of work that guests engage in here, we know that it is crucial that the food they are eating nourishes and supports them. We address allergies & preferences; we ensure the food is culturally relevant; we make sure that guests know what to expect, and we encourage them to stretch a little bit.
2. Commit to just food and supporting local & just economies.
We are committed to creating a more just food system by:
Serving food that affirms people & animals living with dignity, challenges racism in the food system, builds economies where we can all thrive, and encourages a more sustainable relationship with the land & the environment. This also means that it is often literally better for our bodies.
We strive to support: local producers and neighbors, small producers, worker cooperatives, farmers/producers of color, fair trade producers, unionized workplaces, farmworker justice, environmentally sustainable agriculture, and pasture raised animal production. We value the work of those who grow and prepare our food here on the land. See below for a list of vendors we use.
3. Be financially sustainable for The Stone House.
We cannot always make choices that align with our values. In order to remain financially sustainable, we make the hard decisions about our food purchases from a mindful and principled place.
