Join us for a screening of the compelling documentary film, Battle for Brooklyn.  The film, which was on the short list to be nominated for an Oscar this year, profiles a community’s fight against irresponsible and profit-driven development in Brooklyn, NY, the significant but often hidden influence of money on government & the media, and the ominous expansion of the right of eminent domain. But the film also is a celebration of how we can remain unified in the face of divisive corporate tactics.  There will be an opportunity after the screening to discuss our reaction to the film, and to connect it with our experiences here in the Triangle.

Read more at Battle for Brooklyn‘s website:  a ‘documentary about the struggle of one man, Daniel Goldstein, and his community to save their homes from from being demolished to make way for a new basketball arena as part of the largest development plan in New York City history, currently under construction in downtown Brooklyn, NY’.  This intimate, rigorous and infuriating investigation of the seven-year long fight between a small neighborhood in Brooklyn and one of the largest real estate developers in the country captures the cultural zeitgeist that has people revolting against big banks in the Occupy Wall Street movement.  Here is a link to a great Indyweek article on the film.  From the article:  ’This tableau shows the arrogance of a ruling class accustomed to buying its way, which one might be tempted to call a subversion of our form of government, except that it’s probably more accurate to say it is our form of government.”  ”It’s a kind of corruption that’s at the core of our political system, which is why we’re having Occupy Wall Street,” says Galinsky.
