financial overview
Here are four vital aspects for how stone circles relates to money and resources:
1. We have a bottom line value and commitment to ensuring that our work and The Stone House is accessible and affordable. This means that we do not turn anyone away because of lack of funds. It has also catalyzed the creation of a new scholarship fund.
2. We have a diverse revenue model, meaning that we raise money from a range of sources. In FY12 (July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012), these include:
- individual donors (20% of our overall budget)
- earned income from our facilities and tenants on the land (28%)
- foundation support for overall operating expenses and specific programs (50%)
- other opportunities (2%)
3. Some of our practice-based programming (most retreats, for example) include dana. Dana is a Pali word – the original language of the Buddha – meaning “generosity.” Teachings were offered freely and, in a relationship of interdependence, committed spiritual practitioners and teachers were supported by their community. It is an act of faith and a practice we uphold.
4. We are committed to sustainable financial health, which means maintaining a contingency fund for unexpected emergency expenses and to provide a cash flow buffer. Since October 2010, we have put aside 5% of all revenues into our fund with a goal of having 3-4 months operating expenses available for such use within the next three years.
